About

The Khimki Art Gallery is one of the leading art museums in the Moscow region with a unique collection of authentic works by Russian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. The gallery owes its existence to Professor Sergey Nikolaevich Gorshin, an outstanding scientist, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and the largest collector of Russian paintings. He has been forming his collection for more than half a century. From S.N. Gorshin, the gallery received over 200 paintings by renowned masters of Russian realistic painting: I. Aivazovsky, A. Savrasov, I. Shishkin, I. Levitan, V. Polenov, A. Vasnetsov, K. Makovsky, D. Burlyuk, R. Falk and many others.

Currently, the gallery's activities combine the work of a permanent exhibition with the organization of temporary exhibitions, formed both on the basis of its own funds and with the involvement of works from other museums. Temporary exhibitions cover a wide range of topics, from monographic exhibitions dedicated to individual artists and trends to large-scale inter-museum thematic projects.

The gallery develops exhibition activities beyond its borders: works from its collection regularly participate in exhibition projects of leading Russian museums.

Interesting fact

1. A unique collection of Russian realistic paintings
In terms of its composition and artistic value, the collection of the Khimki Gallery stands on a par with the leading museums of the Moscow region. In 1989, the collection was presented at the Tretyakov Gallery and was highly appreciated by experts, a fact that confirms its exceptional importance for Russian culture.

2. A private collection that has become public domain
The history of the Khimki Art Gallery is unique. Her appearance is the result of the selfless gift of the scientist and collector S.N. Gorshin. The collection itself reflects the personality of the founder — his taste, principles and passion for art. Today, visitors can not only enjoy the painting, but also get acquainted with the interesting life story of this amazing man.

3. Trellis hanging
One of the business cards of the Khimki Art Gallery is the trellis hanging, which is extremely rare in modern museums today. This technique, typical of classical private collections and museums of the 19th century, creates a special atmosphere: paintings literally surround the viewer, enter into a dialogue with each other, immersing them in the world of art and allowing them to see the collection exactly as it was during the lifetime of its creator.

4. Double-sided painting by Robert Falk
The gallery houses a unique exhibit: a two-sided work by a famous artist, one of the brightest representatives of the Russian avant-garde. Moreover, both sides are independent works: on the one hand, a still life, on the other, a portrait of a circus performer. You won't find this in every museum!

5. Intimacy and sincerity
Today, the gallery's collection impresses visitors not only with authentic works by famous artists, but also with a warm, soulful atmosphere, which visitors invariably note in their reviews.

The foundation of the gallery's collection is the collection of scientist and collector Sergei Nikolaevich Gorshin. The peculiarity of his approach was that he preferred landscape motifs, striving to show the modest but soulful beauty of Russian nature: forest edges, river banks, villages and urban views. At the same time, the collector set himself a noble goal — to revive the forgotten names of Russian artists. That is why, along with paintings by such world-famous masters as I. Aivazovsky, I. Shishkin and I. Levitan, the gallery presents works by little-known and once undeservedly forgotten authors, including K. Gorbatov, A. Isupov, I. Velts, whose work is arousing increasing interest among the public and the professional community. Thus, each exhibit here is not just a work of art, but also a reflection of the collector's personality, his taste and unique view of Russian painting.
