Morozov Arseniy Ivanovich

Manufacturer, philanthropist
1850–1932

Arseniy Ivanovich Morozov is a manufacturer, manufacturing adviser, representative of the Morozov merchant family, great—grandson of Savva Vasilyevich Morozov.

Main activity
Management of the Bogorodsko‑Glukhovskaya manufactory. Since 1890, Arseny Ivanovich had been in charge of the enterprise — at that time, about 9,000 people worked at the factory. New factory buildings were built under him (including a New Weaving factory with advanced engineering solutions — overhead natural lighting, central ventilation), housing for workers and foreign specialists, and dormitories.
Creation of social infrastructure. Houses with sewerage, central heating and ventilation were built for the workers; Glukhovsky Park was equipped, and a maternity hospital was opened. The structure of the workers' quarters was later partially repeated by the Soviet constructivists.
Community service. In 1894-1906, he was an elected member of the Moscow Stock Exchange Society, later a candidate for election; he was a member of the Council of the Rogozhsky Old Believer community.

Cultural and religious activities and patronage

Support for the Old Believers. Arseny Morozov financed the construction of about 15 Old Believer churches, including the Tikhvin Temple in Moscow (23 Khavskaya St.).
He maintained a choir at the manufactory, which performed ancient Russian singing according to the "kryukova gramota"; the collective performed in both capitals and even recorded gramophone records. For his participation in church singing, Morozov was nicknamed the "singing millionaire."
Collecting. He collected paintings (the collection included works by Levitan, Aivazovsky, and others); part of the collection is now kept in the Noginsk Museum of Local Lore.
Publication of spiritual literature. In 1884-1885, he published The Circle of Ancient Church Znamenny Singing in 6 volumes.

Memory and legacy

Arseniy Morozov's Art Nouveau mansion (architect A.V. Kuznetsov) has been preserved in the Glukhovsky Park of Noginsk.
He was buried at the Rogozhskoye Cemetery in Moscow.
