Andreev Nikolay Andreevich
Nikolai Andreevich Andreev was a Russian and Soviet sculptor, muralist, graphic artist, member of the Peredvizhniki Association (since 1904), Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1931).
Biography
Birth. He was born in Moscow in the family of a carpenter.
Training:
1885-1891 — Stroganov Art and Industrial College;
1892-1901 — Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (studied under S. M. Volnukhin, was influenced by P. P. Trubetskoy).
1904 — joined the Association of Peredvizhniki.
1913 — began working as a theater artist.
1931 — awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR.
Death. He died in Moscow on December 24, 1932. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery (plot No. 2, row 14, place 22). The author of the tombstone is architect G. I. Gavrilov.
Creation
Early period:
Works of genre and social themes with academic techniques and elements of impressionism.
Examples: portrait of P. D. Boborykin (1904), portrait of Leo Tolstoy (1905, both in bronze, Tretyakov Gallery).
Bas-reliefs "Spring" and "Autumn" for the hotel "Metropol" in Moscow (1901).
Works in terracotta (Bacchante on a Goat, 1905) and majolica (Panka, 1912-1913).
Significant monuments:
Monument to Nikolai Gogol (bronze, granite, 1904-1908, opened in 1909, Nikitsky Boulevard, Moscow; architect of the pedestal — Fyodor Shekhtel). The writer is depicted sitting in a pose of mournful reflection; grotesque figures of his characters are on the reliefs of the pedestal.
Monument to Dr. F. P. Haase (1909, Maly Kazenny Lane, Moscow).
Monuments to A. I. Herzen and N. P. Ogarev (1918-1922, erected in 1922 on Mokhovaya Street in front of the Moscow State University building).
Sculpture "Worker" (1925, Proletarian Square, Moscow).
Monument to A. N. Ostrovsky (1926-1929, opened in 1929 on Theater Square near the Maly Theater building, architect — F. O. Shekhtel).
"Leniniana":
He created about 100 sculptural and 200 graphic portraits of V. I. Lenin.
The graphic portrait of Lenin (1930-1932) was included in the design of the party ticket of the CPSU (b) and became canonical.
The statue "Lenin the Leader" (1931-1932), completed and turned into marble by the sculptor's brother V. A. Andreev.
