Ust-Abakan is a cozy village 12 kilometers from Abakan, nestled near the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir in the shadow of the Podkuninsky Mountains. Founded in 1909 as a small ulus, today it is a modern regional center with a population of approximately 14,000.
