Nikolai Yaroshenko is a hereditary military man, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts as an external in 1874. He combined his creative work with many years of service at the Cartridge Factory in St. Petersburg (in 1892 he retired with the rank of Major General), as well as with his active work in the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions: being a member of the Association since 1876, since 1879 - a member of its Board.
This painting is quite a characteristic monument for the artist's work. This canvas is single—figure; a bright and imaginative half-genre, half-portrait, comparable to such famous works by N.A. Yaroshenko as "The Stoker" in 1878 (in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow), "Student" in 1881 (in the same place), "Student", 1880 (in the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts).
Here, a gypsy woman looks from the canvas: active, assertive. She immediately finds direct contact with the viewer, which is facilitated by the complex contrast of lighting: the dark wall of trees behind her, illuminated by the sun, is somewhat akin to her wild, impenetrable and at the same time ebulliently lively face. There is also an expressive and sharp, temperamental brushstroke of the painter and a rapid change in the framing of the composition.
The author likened the window opening created by means of his painting to a very real picture frame. Through it, the restless heroine, without interference, invades not only the visual environment of the painting, but also, illusorily, into our three-dimensional space, where the viewer does not feel isolated at all.
