Orlov Ivan Ivanovich
Ivan Ivanovich Orlov is a prominent zemstvo doctor, one of the founders of zemstvo medicine in the region.
Service and coverage of the territory
Since November 27, 1880, he has been a senior physician at the Solnechnogorsk Zemstvo hospital; he worked there for about 27 years. His medical area covered a significant part of the Klin and Dmitrov counties, a vast territory with scattered villages where medical care was especially needed.
Multidisciplinary practice
Orlov combined several specializations: he worked as a surgeon and an optometrist, paid attention to pharmacy and staff training for zemstvo medicine.
Organization of the medical environment
He created a Scientific Medical Society at the hospital to help doctors share their experiences and maintain their professional level.
A humanistic approach
His motto was "Everything for the patient": even in his own office, he set up a luxurious armchair specifically for the patient. This approach was an important part of the ethics of zemstvo medicine — the doctor had to not only treat, but also preserve the strength and dignity of a person from the people as much as possible.
Connections and influence
He was friends with A. P. Chekhov (also a zemstvo doctor), treated the families of A. Blok and D. I. Mendeleev; in particular, in the winter of 1888, he performed a complex lung operation on Mendeleev's one-and-a-half-year-old son.
Community service
Together with the philanthropist V. A. Morozova, he organized hot meals for children in schools in the Klin district — that is, he expanded the concept of health care beyond the doctor's office.
