Sergey Nikolaevich Durylin is a Russian and Soviet writer, teacher, theologian, literary critic, art critic, religious writer and poet. Doctor of Philology, Professor.

Early years and education

He was born on September 14 [26], 1886, into a merchant family in Moscow.
In 1910-1914, he studied at the Moscow Archaeological Institute; the theme of his graduation thesis was the iconography of St. Sophia.
During his high school years, he abandoned the faith, but in 1910 he returned to the "faith of the fathers."

Creative and scientific activities

Literary work: published in the magazines Libra, Russian Thought, Voice of the Past, Niva, Path, etc. In Soviet times — in "Vozrozhdenie", "Krasnaya Niva", "Siberian Lights", "Ogonka", etc.
Religious and philosophical activities: In the autumn of 1912, he was secretary of the Moscow Religious and Philosophical Society in Memory of Vladimir Solovyov (until its closure in 1918).
Ethnography and travel: in 1906-1917, he made a number of trips to the Russian North (Olonets province, Arkhangelsk, Solovetsky Monastery, Kandalaksha, Lapland, Kem, the shores of Norway, Pudozh, Petrozavodsk), as well as to the Old Believer sites of the Volga region and Kaluga province. He collected folklore, studied traditions and culture of the regions.
Pedagogy: engaged in private teaching activities. Among his students:

the poet Boris Pasternak (in his autobiography Pasternak wrote About Durylin: "It was he who lured me from music to literature");
artist Nikolai Chernyshov.

The trials of the 1920s

In March 1920, he was ordained a celibate priest, and served in the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Klenniki with Father Alexei Mechev.
On June 20, 1922, he was arrested, spent six months in Butyrskaya and Vladimirskaya prisons, and then exiled to Chelyabinsk.
Until 1924, he was in charge of the archaeological department of the Chelyabinsk Museum.

Post-war activity and recognition

In 1944 he received the title of Doctor of Philology.
Since 1945, he has been a professor and head of the Department of History of the Russian and Soviet Theater at GITIS.
Senior Researcher at the Theater History Department of the Institute of Art History of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
On October 29, 1949, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for his research in the field of Russian classical drama, the stage history of plays and the study of the problems of acting.

Memory and legacy

The archive of S. N. N. Durylin is kept in RGALI (fund No. 2980) and in the Memorial House‑Museum of S. N. N. Durylin.
In 1993, the Memorial House‑Museum of S. N. N. Durylin was opened in the city of Korolev (Bolshevo microdistrict).
One of Korolev Streets and Bolshevskaya City Library No. 2 are named after him.
Since 2008, the Literary Prize in Memory of Sergei Nikolaevich Durylin has been awarded in Korolev (in the categories "Prose", "Poetry", "Drama", "Literary Criticism", etc.).
He was buried in Moscow at the Danilovsky Cemetery.

Музей-заповедник «Абрамцево» расположен в 60 км к северо-востоку от Москвы, недалеко от г. Сергиева Посада. В 1843 г. Абрамцево приобрел писатель С.Т. Аксаков, создавший здесь свои лучшие произведения. При Аксакове усадьбу посещали писатели Н.В. Гоголь и И.С. Тургенев, историк М.П. Погодин, актер М.С. Щепкин, другие знаменитые современники.В 1870 г. Абрамцево купил железнодорожный промышленник, художественный и театральный деятель С.И. Мамонтов. При Мамонтове в Абрамцеве гостили В.Д. Поленов, В.М. Васнецов, И.Е. Репин, И.С. Остроухов, В.А. Серов, К.А. Коровин, М.В. Нестеров, М.А. Врубель и другие художники, музыканты, актеры. Творческое содружество этих мастеров вошло в историю искусства как Абрамцевский художественный кружок. После Октябрьской революции 1917 г. усадьба была национализирована и превращена в музей, но художественные традиции Мамонтовского кружка не прервались. В XX столетии в Абрамцеве жили и работали художники И.Э. Грабарь, П.П. Кончаловский, И.И. Машков, скульпторы В.И. Мухина, Б.Д. Королев и многие другие представители творческих профессий.В наши дни территория музея-заповедника «Абрамцево» занимает около 50 гектаров и включает памятники архитектуры XVIII и XIX вв., парк и живописные окрестности реки Вори. В собрании музея-заповедника хранится более 25 тысяч экспонатов: живопись, графика, скульптура, произведения декоративно-прикладного и народного искусства, а также фотографии и архивы бывших владельцев усадьбы.
