Borisov-musatov Viktor Elpidiforovich

Artist
1870—1905

Viktor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov is a Russian artist, a master of symbolic images of "noble nests", who worked in the styles of symbolism and Art Nouveau. His work had a significant impact on the development of symbolism in Russian painting and inspired the artists of the Blue Rose association.

Biography

Borisov-Musatov was born in 1870 in Saratov into a family of former serfs. At the age of three, he suffered a severe spinal injury, which caused a hump to grow, and health problems plagued him all his life.

The artist was educated at the Saratov Real College, where his first drawing skills were given to him by teacher F. A. Vasiliev. Then he studied at the I. F. Ananyev Drawing School in Saratov, at the studio of the Saratov Society of Fine Arts under V. V. Konovalov, at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under P. P. Chistyakov, and also at the studio of F. Cormon in Paris.

In 1895, Borisov-Musatov traveled to the Crimea and the Caucasus. Since 1898, he lived mainly in Saratov, since 1901 — in the Zubrilovka estate of the Saratov province. In 1903 he moved to Podolsk, and in 1905 to Tarusa, where he died in October of the same year. He was buried on the banks of the Oka River.

Creation

Borisov-Musatov created landscapes, portraits, story compositions and sketches of decorative panels. His works are distinguished by their lyricism, attention to detail and the desire to convey the mood through the state of nature. The artist often depicted female images, landscapes and architecture, creating an idealized world where serenity and beauty reign on canvases.

Among his famous works are the paintings "Self—Portrait with his Sister" (1898), "Spring" (1898-1901), "Reservoir" (1902), "Ghosts" (1903), "Emerald Necklace" (1903-1904), "Requiem" (1905).
