Golitsyn Dmitry Vladimirovich
His Serene Highness Prince Dmitry Vladimirovich Golitsyn is a military and statesman of the Russian Empire, General of cavalry, military Governor—General of Moscow.
Basic biographical information
Date of birth: October 29, 1771, Yaropolets, Moscow province.
Date of death: March 27, 1844, Paris (at the age of 72).
Origin: from the Moscow branch of the Golitsyn princes, the son of V. B. Golitsyn and N. P. Golitsyna ("the mustachioed Princess").
Military career and participation in wars
Golitsyn served from 1789 to 1844, participated in the following campaigns and battles:
Polish Uprising (1794): distinguished himself during the capture of Prague (part of Warsaw), awarded the Order of St. George IV degree.
Wars of the Third and Fourth Coalitions: Golymin (1806) — awarded the Order of St. George, III degree; Preisish‑Eylau, Guttstadt, Heilsberg, Friedland.
Russian‑Swedish War (1808-1809): commanded the Vassky Corps.
The Patriotic War of 1812: The Battle of Borodino; The Battle of Krasnoe.
War of the Sixth Coalition (1813-1814): Lutzen, Bautzen, Dresden, Kulm, Leipzig; Brienne, Fer Champenoise, capture of Paris.
Ranks: Colonel (1797); Major General (1798); Lieutenant General (1800); General of Cavalry (1814).
Government activities
On January 6, 1820, he was appointed Moscow military Governor‑General by Alexander I. He ruled Moscow for 24 years.
On October 31, 1821, he became a member of the State Council.
1822 — Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.
On April 16, 1841, he received the title of His Serene Highness Prince from Nicholas I.
Contribution to the development of Moscow
During Golitsyn's governorship in Moscow
the Voskresensky Garden was built over the old Neglinnaya riverbed;
the buildings of the Bolshoi and Maly Theaters have been built;
The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was founded;
permanent Moskvoretsky Bridge has been erected;
The First Gradskaya and Novo‑Yekaterininskaya hospitals have been opened;
There is a boulevard on the Kremlin embankment;
The triumphal gates were built at the Tverskaya outpost.

Dmitry Vladimirovich was awarded many Russian and foreign awards, including the
Order of St. Andrew the Apostle with diamond badges.;
Order of St. Alexander Nevsky with diamonds;
Orders of St. George, III and IV degrees;
Order of St. Vladimir, I and II degrees;
Order of St. Anna, First Class;
silver and bronze medals "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812";
a golden weapon decorated with diamonds;
foreign orders (Red Eagle, First class, Maria Theresa, Leopold, Maximilian Joseph, Lion and Sun, First class).
Last years and death
In 1843, Golitsyn went to France for medical treatment. He died in Paris on March 27, 1844, from the effects of a surgical operation. He was buried in the Donskoy Monastery in the tomb of the Princes Golitsyn — the Church of Michael the Archangel.
